About Resurrection City, 1968
Resurrection City, 1968 was released to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Accordingly, it's a powerful collection of images taken at the encampment that took place during 42 days in May of 1968, where over 3,000 demonstrators campaigned against the power structures that held them back. Freedman documents the protest with the sympathy and solidarity of an insider. Her powerful, gritty black and white images show the viewer the sentiments that floated around Resurrection City. Feelings of anger and frustration. But also, we see the cooperation, the spirit of community and the desire for change. To sum up, this book is about the Poor People's Campaign efforts to bring people together, about bonding through shared experiences of poverty and discrimination. Ultimately, it's about community coming together to destroy an oppressive system, from the bottom up.
