About Senescence
In the hands of Chloe Sells, the age-old tradition of the still-life becomes a tool to describe and investigate a life full of movement. Based between London and Maun, Botswana, the photographer gathers together materials from both natural and manmade sources. Then, she arranges them in allusively expressive tableaux which are subsequently turned into a unique C-type print via a series of hands-on, darkroom-based processes.
‘We see these still lifes through chromatic veils so deep and beautiful it seems as if colour had been poured onto the pictures from a broken prism,’ writes Nick Hackworth in the handsome, versatile and inexpensive limited-edition book published to coincide with the show. ‘The darkroom interventions break the illusory conceit of realism and carry the images into another realm, beyond the pedestrian material realm.’
