Artist Bio
Daniel Meadows describes himself as a ‘Documentarist’ who has spent his life ‘recording British society, challenging the status quo by working in a way that captures extraordinary aspects of ordinary life. Principally through photography but also with audio recordings and short movies’. His journey in this genre began in the 1970’s with projects such as Free Photographic Omnibus (1973-74). During which, Meadows travelled around North England in a bus which became his home, dark-room and gallery combined. Meadows studied at Manchester Polytechnic (1970-73). Projects from that time include The Shop on Greame Street in Moss Side (1972), as well as two collaborations with fellow student Martin Parr: Butlin’s by the Sea in Yorkshire (1972) and June Street in Salford (1973).
His solo exhibitions include The Free Photographic Omnibus at Museum of Modern Art Oxford (1974); Living Like This at the Intitute of Contemporary Art, London (1975); Suberbia at The Photographers’ Gallery London, (1987); National Portraits: Now and Then, at the Irish Gallery of Photography, Dublin (2000) and Daniel Meadows: Early Photographic Works at The National Media Museum Bradford ( 2011-12). Also, his group shows include Photographs of Butlin’s Filey at Impressions Gallery, Bradford (1972); Serpentine Photography 73, at the Serpentine Galleries, London (1973); How We Are: Photographing Britain from the 1840s to the Present at the Tate Britain (2007) and The Other Britain Revisited: Photographs from New Society, at The V&A Museum, London (2010).
