About
“My father never said much, yet he always had a lot on his mind. My mother, eyes so bright, would explain what my father was thinking. Growing up I knew all about the war and the depression and outdoor toilets and burning corn cobs to stay warm during those Iowa farm winters. My mother told me she fell in love with my father in high school thinking he was tall and handsome , plus he had a car. I think that combo works about as well as anything. I too loved my dad because he had a car. On Sundays after church, the most glorious reward was my father would often take us off for a family drive to the countryside. Alan and Maryanna’s lives were largely formed out of often harsh realities . They made the best of things always, stayed in love to the end, missioned us to live life as we best saw fit. So I took them at their word. I was well supplied with grist for the mill.”
