About Caspian: The Elements
This book is Chloe Dewe Mathews’s record of five years spent roaming the borderlands of the Caspian Sea. Here, far from the arena of global politics, in a resource rich region roiled by contested geopolitics, Dewe Mathews found that elemental materials like oil, rock, and uranium are central to the mystical, practical, artistic, religious, and also therapeutic aspects of daily life. With essays by Morad Montazami, Sean O’Hagan, and also Arnold van Bruggen, this book offers a series of powerful visual narratives that explore the deep links between the peoples of the Caspian and their enigmatic and coveted landscapes. So, between 2010 and 2015, Dewe Mathews visited the five countries that surround the Caspian Sea: Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Southern Russia, and Northern Iran. Dewe Mathews divided the book into three distinct chapters ― “Oil, Gas, Fire,” “Rock, Salt, Uranium,” and then “Water”.
