Do you ever wonder if someone is looking at your texts when you're in a public place? If somebody is actually watching what you're typing...what would they see? Well, Jeff Mermelstein has done that. By 'that' we mean he looked. In fact, not only he looked but also published a book containing the texts by residents of New York he casually oversaw. His book is title #nyc. How appropriate for a book filled with contemporary written language with all of its acronyms and wordplay? This book may be perceived as "voyeurism at its finest" by some people, but in reality it is simply a documentation of life. Wholesome moments of everyday life caught through the glaring screens of our pocket computers. Furthermore, what is intriguing about this project is the richness of emotion that those captions, those moments, are filled with. Through this fairly new form of communication we have the opportunity once again to share everything our heart desires. And thinking that we're alone with the receiver of our texts means there is no filter. We can share our lust or hate, confess our secrets and dreams. In conclusion, Mermelstein captures the complexity of the life of New York's residents through jokes and heartbreaks, text by text, composing a short history of the big city unfolds before our eyes.
