About Des Oiseaux
Offset centerlines, graphic effects, and the power of shadows are prolific here. These elements elaborate a poetic universe where the feeling of strangeness mingles with that of a raw reality. Also, the powerful balance of her compositions reveals skies saturated with birds, funny and unexpected situations where chickens wait quietly on market stalls, where pigeons compete with monkeys; elsewhere they are moving clouds that look like real organisms alive with smooth and fluid movements.
For Iturbide, live birds represent freedom. However, neither death nor a certain surrealistic spirit are ever far away. Iturbide's photographs are often enigmatic paintings, for example: dead birds lined up on a sidewalk, predatory birds waiting for their prey in the middle of the desert, crows flying over dry trees, or inert tits sitting on the eyes of a woman.
The organic dimension, linked to the blood, to the flesh, to the mud, sweat or soil, also permeates most of her pictures. The photographer maintains a relationship close to reality by capturing singular moments. From India to Mexico, from the sea to the urban terraces, seagulls, eagles, pigeons, herons, and crows invade the space of men or slip into it unexpected and lonely.
As a result, this publication is part of the
Des Oiseaux (On birds) collection that celebrates, through the vision of different artists, their immense presence in a world where they are now vulnerable. Accompanying these photographs, the ornithologist Guilhem Lesaffre writes a special essay.
