About Transvest
Onodera began working on this series and continues to. It consists of human forms clipped from newspapers and also magazines filled in with a photo montage of preexisting fragments of images. For example, streetlamps at night, microscopic photography, and scenes of historic buildings. They are photographed with strong back lighting in order to produce silhouettes. The wide variety of figures are strongly backlit. She has assigned names to these figures such as “Krio” and “Rosa”. The back lighting means that the images are almost, but not entirely, obscured. As a composite of many different images, each figure transcends and also seems to embrace the entire world. “Transvest” means to cross dress, or wear the clothing of the opposite gender.
