Ash Wednesday New Orleans is a collection of photographs Soth took during his visit to the Mardi Gras. Firstly, the book shows Soth's images of Bourbon Street after 'Fat Tuesday'. Soth captured the aftermath of a celebration that focuses on the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before Lent. Secondly, the book focuses on portraits of individuals who have ash crosses on their foreheads, which signals it's Ash Wednesday. As a result, this books of loaded with depictions of the communal joy, the colourful rituals and the devastation of a city that is world-famous for this festivity. Finally, this title was printed in a limited edition of 500 copies.
About Alec Soth
Alec Soth (born 1969) is an American photographer, based in Minneapolis. He is a member of Magnum Photos. Soth makes “large-scale American projects” featuring the midwestern United States. New York Times art critic Hilarie M. Sheets wrote that he has made a “photographic career out of finding chemistry with strangers” and photographs “loners and dreamers”. His work tends to focus on the “off-beat, hauntingly banal images of modern America” according to The Guardian art critic Hannah Booth.
