About The Polish Rider
The Polish Rider is a short story written by Ben Lerner in the winter of 2015 where he incorporated fictionalized elements of the life and work of the artist Anna Ostoya, who had recently lost two of her canvases in the back of an Uber. 'The Polish Rider' is the result of this ongoing conversation across media and genres. In addition to the story, this volume includes an essay by Lerner that describes how Ostoya's actual body of work catalyzed the fiction, as well as the contingencies and uncanny correspondences that have shaped their exchange. Ostoya's compositions -- both those that prompted Lerner's writing and those that take it up -- are never merely illustrative. Instead, they keep literature from having the last word. In this unclassifiable volume, the boundaries between fact and fiction, original and reproduction, text and image, flicker as you read and look.
About the artists
Anna Ostoya studied at the Parsons School in Paris (1997–2001) and at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main (2002–2005) and in the years 2008–2009 she realised a study program within the framework of the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York. As a professional artist, she often focuses on selected issues (violence, history of the avant-garde, contemporary information overload), which she thoroughly analyses by means of queries. She builds complicated relations between themes taken from literature, philosophy, history, art, political science, sociology, science but also mass culture, media, the internet and everyday life. Ben Lerner is an American poet, novelist, essayist, and critic. He has been a Fulbright Scholar, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, a finalist for the National Book Award and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.
