About Semear
Over a century has passed since the first Japanese Immigrants arrived in Brazil. Kawauchi was invited by MAM (Museu de Arte Moderna, Sao Paulo) to photograph Brazil. In this new series, she photographs everything from the Japanese Brazilian community to the great scenic nature and animals living there. As well as the everyday life of people living there and Rio Carnival. So, she took these photos across three visits to Brazil.
Sao Paulo, Belem, Tome-Acu, Campinas, Londrina, Iguacu, Pananal, Bonito, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Luis, Lencois Maranhenses... Every moment in Brazil is inscribed beautifully, delicately and sometimes nostalgically in Kawauchi's images.
The different races and cultures. As well as the disparity in wealth, festivals and everyday life. All of which are mingled in Brazil. The rhythm of life is welling up from the chaos. In this new series of work, you will see a new ground of Kawauchi, which she found in Brazil.

Artist Bio
Kawauchi became interested in photography while studying graphic design and photography at Seian University of Art and Design where she graduated in 1993. She first worked in commercial photography for an advertising agency for several years before embarking on a career as a fine art photographer. She has mentioned that she continues to work the advertising job. Her background and experience with design has influenced the edits and arrangements of photos in her series. She often thinks about new ways to see her photographs, allowing her to continue to find new meaning and significance in her work.
