About Ol Pejeta
Can you imagine being the last one of your species? We can't either. However, this is something that Jack Davison documents and shares with us in his new monograph Ol Pejeta. Ol Pejeta Conservascy is one of the largest rhinoceros sanctuaries in the world and it's based in Kenya. Still, that's not the most important thing about it. See, Ol Pejeta is home to the last two Northern White Rhinos in existence - mother and daughter Najin & Fatu. In this beautifully presented monograph, Davison invites us to witness the life of the two creatures and their devoted caretaker Zacharia.
The reason behind Davison's visit to the sanctuary in the first place was for an article by the New York Times about the successful in-vitro fertilisation of their frozen eggs by a team of scientists. Which on its own gives us hope that we soon may be able to prevent the extinction of this species. There's the powerful play between light and dark which is ever present in Davison's work. However, the contrasts are not only used in the making of the photographs, but also in the story as a whole. The dark side of the story being the tragedy of yet another species being on the brink of extinction and the bright side being the hope that science and innovation can help protect the natural world. Davison's Ol Pejeta captures the power and grace of these two majestic creatures as well as their deep spiritual connection with their keepers, who guard them with their lives.
