About Morgue

The images in Morgue were taken at the state morgue of Rhode Island between 1972 and 1973. The photographs are of corpses taken into examination, in need of answers for their accidental or suspicious deaths. Crib deaths, suicide, accidental monoxide intoxication, the crude portraits expose a reality that we don't often have to face. That one of death and what happens afterwards. A highly cold and forensic setting along the black and white photographs create a dark atmosphere, but it doesn't become morbid, for Silverthorne portrays the subjects with dignity and not in a morbid fashion.  

About Jeffrey Silverthorne

Jeffrey Silverthorne is an American photographer mainly known for taking pictures of death and nudity. In 1946 he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and he began taking pictures around 1967. He had his photographs published in "Directions for Leaving", written by Annie Proulx and first published in the summer of 2007. He currently teaches at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island.
