About Landscape
Beautiful photographs of anti-erosion engineering in the hills of rural Japan, highlighting the seemingly unresolvable conflict between man and nature. In its interior, Japan is mountainous and also green. Most of the population still lives along its coasts, but as people slowly move inland, mountain sides are turn away to create necessary horizontal space. In order to secure the newly exposed inclines, concrete is sprayed and poured on to the vertical plains, or hoisted as pre-poured grids onto the hillsides. Since 1983, Toshio Shibata has photographed these sites. His elaborate compositions and exquisite black and white prints are works of art that record the merging, and resulting tension, of Japan's great natural beauty and the craftsmanship of its engineers. So, Landscape presents a selection of 43 photographs from this project, with essays by Anne Tucker and Etsuro Ishihara.
Artist Bio
Toshio Shibata is one of Japan’s most respected contemporary photographers. His work has been the subject of exhibitions and publications throughout Japan, the United States, and Europe, and is included in such public collections as The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
