About
Raúl Corrales, a giant in Cuban photography, spent his life capturing the soul of his country. Born in 1925, his early work shone a light on the struggles of Cuba's most vulnerable – peasants, miners, and the working class. His camera became a powerful tool for social commentary, documenting realities often ignored. The Cuban Revolution in 1959 marked a shift. Corrales, aligned with the revolution's ideals, became one of Fidel Castro's official photographers. But his approach remained unique. Unlike those who glorified revolutionary leaders, Corrales continued to focus on the everyday lives of Cubans. He documented the transformations promised by the revolution, portraying the newfound opportunities embraced by women, Afro-descendants, and those previously marginalized. While Corrales did photograph Castro for a time, his true passion lay in capturing the human stories woven into Cuba's tapestry.
