About Grasslands
Grasslands is Kirby's second monograph and serves as a companion to his first book Wheatcountry as well as a stand-alone monograph of this important and timely series of photographs. In 2005, Kirby began a major study of the National Grasslands in the United States. The resulting monograph comprises 47 duotone plates, sequenced geographically from America's heartland of Nebraska, the Dakotas, Kansas and Oklahoma through Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho, to the Oregon and California coastlines. Printed in a first edition of 1,000 casebound copies, Grasslands opens with an introductory essay by Richard Manning, and concludes with Jay Dusard's insightful and feisty afterword.
About Don Kirby
Don Kirby literally grew up turning the surface of the earth upside down—on his parent’s sharecropper farms in Northwestern Missouri. Failing in that enterprise, his family moved to other work as he studied math and physics in college with a beginning interest in photography. Emerging with advanced math and science degrees, he moved to the West Coast and began a career in aerospace. Escaping frequently from the city to maintain sanity, he became a backpacker, mountain climber, and river runner, always carrying a slide camera to document his and his friend’s activities.
