About The Boys
When two of Schatzberg's oldest friends died unexpectedly, he turned to his camera as a grieving mechanism and the result is The Boys. This is a collection of old seventies snapshots that tell the story of a group of friends. Starting when they were all together until the present day, when some of them are here no longer. Schatzberg's deeply intimate project introduces each person as they are today and pairs the present with images from the past. Thus, the viewer is presented with a poetic, touching and personal account of friendship, cultural change as well as personal change. From boys to men. A philosophical photo book that considers ageing and the inevitable process of growing apart, The Boys moves through the lives of these men, from when they were growing up together in the 50's in post-war Long Island, exploring loss, ageing and grief.
