About Les Amies de Place Blanche
Les Amies de Place Blanche was first published in 1983. It's a project that about identity, about survival and in the words of Strömholm himself, about the right to live. This book focuses on the transexual community in paris in the late 1950s and the early 1960s. It would become the catalyst that helped established Strömholm's reputation as one of the leading photographers of the century. As well as portraying a highly oppressed community, depicting the lives of transexual women who often worked as sex workers in the streets of Paris, this book captures the agitated spirit of a France still at war with Algeria. So, Christer Strömholm developed a friendship with these women that lasted years, portraying their beauty and their struggles. Aman Iman brings us this re-publication that includes the original essays by Strömholm , as well as publisher Johan Ehrenberg's. Further, it also includes newly commissioned texts by Jacky and Nana, who are two of the women who appear in the book. Besides, the edition has an introduction by leading French journalist, actor, director and producer Hélène Hazera, who happens to be a trans woman.About Christer Strömholm
