About Midnight La Frontera by Ken Light
In Midnight La Frontera we see the images Light took between 1983 and 1987 along the California/Mexico border with his Hasselblad camera and flash. He rode along with US Border Patrol agents as they, in the middle of the night, combed the Otay Mesa looking for “illegal aliens.”
Light was there when people trying to cross were apprehended. This way, this works focuses on how those people were captured by authorities as well as the camera. The result is a striking collection of black and white images that remind us of mug shots. Further, they were taken at a moment of extreme vulnerability and fear, making this book a work of social and political significance.
